“You should be better than you are, but it’s not because you’re worse than other people. It’s because you’re not everything you should be.”
- Dr. Jordan B. Peterson
There is some deep truth in Jordan Peterson’s quotes and not because “he is a famous guy so let’s blindly follow his advice”.
No, it is because most of the way he views life is based on what shaped the moral values of the Western world, the Bible. And I’m not talking in a religious sense, it is much, much deeper than that, because the Bible represents truth itself since it is built on the experiences of generations of human beings, the older of which dates back to the 4th century CE.
The fact is that the Bible talks about events as they are, in the most archetypical sense.
I’m not here to prove this concept, and if you are interested in learning more about it, on the YT channel of Jordan Peterson there are plenty of videos and lectures on the subject.
Back on the topic now…
Knowing that most of Peterson’s opinions derive from a text so rich and wise, it is worth listening to and reflecting on them.
In the quote I chose, Dr. Peterson mentions that one should avoid comparing oneself to others, for everyone has a different background and set of unfair advantages. Rather, one should focus on discovering, aiming, and becoming the best one can become.
It is no secret that there are remarkably amazing humans out there who can build such incredible things and yet they are still humans. One can argue that some of them had extremely favorable starting points or were superior to average physical or mental abilities. Although that plays a role, if one were to be truly sincere with oneself, he would easily discover what he already knows…
He is still acting in ways that make his life worse.
I get it that most people either had some genetic or financial luck, but if you were to put an undisciplined individual in a situation like that, I guarantee that he would still need to express his maximum potential.
How can I be so sure?
Look at the average teenager in the West and then try to describe their quality of life to someone living in a developing country.
There is not a one-size-fits-all formula to success, but starting by avoiding all the bad habits and implementing some discipline in one’s life looks like a pretty promising hypothesis to me. And the fact that you are here reading this article, proves that there is still a better version of yourself waiting to be developed and there is another one after that and another one as long as you keep improving and your heart still beats.
